Job Description

The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization and one of the nation’s few remaining independent daily metro news organizations, is seeking an experienced Multiplatform News Desk Editor to fill two shifts per week. Starting times for our shifts can range from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Shifts for this position are currently envisioned as Mondays and Fridays, 1-9:30 p.m.

As part of our team, you will ensure newsworthy content moves rapidly from initial draft to final product with accuracy, clarity, fairness, grammar and style. You should be comfortable working under tight deadlines with ease while supporting multiple editors at once. Ideally, you have previous experience (and mastery) with both AP style and knowledge of local geography and nomenclature.

Applicants may work remotely but must be based in the Puget Sound area.

  Responsibilities

  • Copy-editing news, business and arts/lifestyle stories for web and print publication, and helping produce digital news alerts and email newsletters.
  • Writing web headlines with SEO in mind and print headlines that expand on them.
  • Working collaboratively with various teams at The Seattle Times on web and print production.
  • Maintaining a consistently high-quality product with sharp grammar and unfailing accuracy.
  • Multitasking with the demands of production work -- editing on deadline as well as communicating continuously on Slack and email.
  • Upholding our ethics code and standards of fairness, independence and inclusion.
  • Staying up to date on digital best practices and on how to use digital techniques, including headline writing, to reach audiences and optimize our content.
  • Practicing a commitment to coverage that is inclusive. This means considering in our stories, headlines and other display type the full range of human diversity with respect to ability, language, culture, gender, age and identity.

Qualifications

We are committed to diversity and creating an inclusive newsroom, and encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply. If your profile doesn’t match this job description exactly, you may still be a candidate for this position. Please let us know how your skills and experience relate to the role and its objectives in your Cover Letter.

  • Experience: At least 3 years’ experience working on a copy desk at a major daily metro news organization.
  • Education: College degree, or equivalent combination of education and/or professional experience.
  • Strong editing skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively under deadline pressure
  • Familiarity with WordPress is a plus.

Compensation:  The full pay range for this position is $30.76 to $45.69 per hour. We typically pay between $30.76 and $39.42 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Benefits:

  • Employee assistance program
  • 401(k) plan with employer match
  • Sick time accrued at .0385 of an hour for every hour compensated; unused sick pay accrues to an extended illness bank
  • Vacation time accrued at .0385 hours for each straight-time hour compensated
  • Subsidized transit cards and parking costs
  • Complimentary Seattle Times subscription
  • Wellness program
  • Parental leave options

Please note: This is a union-represented position.
